Six Days from Supernova! - Courtney Gee Poker Update

It’s that time of year! Christmas lights are going up, grocery stores are playing merry music 24/7, and the malls are a nightmare. Oh yeah, and all the grinders are online trying to cram in as many games as possible before the year ends. 

Right now I have 91,551 VPPs, which means around 6 full days of poker until I hit Supernova. I play a lot of half days, though, so I probably won’t hit it until December 18th (which is, coincidentally, the day of the giant Sunday Million).

I ended November with a profit, but not as much as I was hoping for.

The November result means that I am just short of my profit goal for the year:

Net profit: +$29,539.43

It seems like it should be easy to hit it by the time I’m done playing this month, although December is going kind of badly so far. Sessions have been pretty frustrating, and it was topped off the other day by my power going out.

I had been playing for less than an hour and was building tables up, so I thought I only had like 9 tables at the time. A report from PokerStars says that 11 of my SnGs were affected, though. It was around $600 in buy-ins, which seems like a lot of money to just punt off because I have no backup solution for power.

Courtney also occasionally goes outside.

The problem was two-fold because my laptop had no juice and I also had no Internet. I probably could have tried to tether my laptop to my phone if I’d actually had battery on my laptop, but…

I ended up driving to Starbucks with my laptop. Obviously I got there and realized I’d left my RSA token at home, though. SIGH. Yes, I am a moron. I drove back home to get the damn RSA and by the time I was logged in, I had three SnGs left.

I was ridiculously short in all of them and could only double up in one. Eventually I had a solid stack but ran a little bad on the bubble, so I had to settle for 3rd. I salvaged $200, though, which is lucky!

I feel really stupid for letting a problem like this cost me money and time. It’s pretty easily preventable, but I just hadn’t bothered. I used to subscribe to mobile Internet, but I wasn’t using it often so I cancelled the monthly service. The Internet stick is just sitting in a box unused, and it’s kind of tilting to think that I could have paid for an entire year of the service with the amount of money I lost.

Being able to tether my phone is probably a good enough short term solution as long as my laptop is in okay condition. It would be way more ideal to continue to play on my desktop, though, so I might buy a generator in the new year.

If anyone reading this has some ideas for backup power/Internet for online poker, please comment and let me know. It’s definitely something every professional poker player should think about.
